Wedding Insurance

Not being an insurance agency, WeddingChannel.com cannot advise you about whether or not to purchase insurance for your wedding, but we can tell you all we've found out about the subject, and let you make your decisions from there. As you've prepared for your wedding, you've no doubt made hefty deposits and signed several iron-clad contracts with service providers for such things as the reception location, the flowers, the catering and so on. These contracts protect them, but what about you? Read on to find out if wedding insurance is right for you.

What Is Wedding Insurance?

For many years, insurance companies in England have offered something called Special Occasion Insurance. In the event of an unforeseen mishap, weather troubles or no-show service providers, the people planning the special occasion would be able to recoup some or all of the money they'd put down in deposits. In the early 1990s, a variation of this idea took hold in the United States: wedding insurance. These relatively inexpensive policies (starting at around $200) can really help you out of a financial bind should some misfortune befall your wedding celebration.

What's Covered?

If your wedding is unable to take place as planned, wedding insurance policies cover several very important aspects of the event -- and a few unexpected things as well. Here are some of the areas covered in a standard policy, should you be unable to recoup the money. Not all policies are alike, and the amount of coverage naturally depends on your premium payment, so make sure your agent explains your coverage clearly and in detail.

Weather.

If the policy is purchased more than 14 days before the event, and bad weather prevents the celebration from taking place, the costs of rescheduling the event are covered; this includes such things as flowers, food and location rental. Couples planning outdoor weddings and those getting married during times known for very bad weather might find this aspect of the policy particularly interesting.

Key People.

If people crucial to the wedding are unable to attend due to illness or injury, the costs of postponement are covered. This also holds true if the celebrant fails to appear on the day. Service Providers. If your caterer doesn't arrive with the food, or the florist doesn't show, and the wedding is unable to take place as planned, you're covered for the cost of rescheduling the entire event.

Location.

Should the ceremony or reception locations go out of business, the policy will cover you for the cost of rescheduling. This coverage extends to the rehearsal dinner location as well.

Add-Ons.

Riders to the policy (commonly known as floaters) are available for a number of wedding-related areas without a substantial increase in cost to you. Some of the floaters you may wish to add are listed below. If you are concerned about a particular cost, ask your insurance agent if there's a way to cover it. Here are some common floaters:

The Attire.

This floater covers you if the bridal shop goes out of business -- your gown's gone and so is your deposit. This policy addition can be modified to cover damage of the gown as well as re-rental of men's attire in the event of a postponement.

Gifts.

A floater can be drawn up to protect you against theft of your wedding gifts. In some cases, your homeowners or renters insurance might cover such an occurrence, so check these policies before you add to your wedding insurance costs.

Photography.

Floaters are available to cover you if the photographer doesn't arrive or the negatives are destroyed. This coverage allows you to reunite the entire wedding party for a reshoot.

Got To Go.

If either member of the couple is in the military, and is suddenly called to duty, the cost of postponing the event is covered. In some cases this also applies to non-military people whose companies suddenly post them to distant locations. Honeymoon. If the honeymoon has to be postponed due to illness or bad weather, this special floater will allow you to reschedule your trip at no additional cost.

Liability.

Generally, the location at which you hold your reception will be covered if a guest is hurt, or leaves intoxicated and gets into an accident. However, such coverage does not apply if the event takes place in a private home or a public setting such as a park. Ask your agent to explain the liability for your circumstances.

Consider The Ring.

Wedding insurance policies do not cover your engagement ring. The ring will fall under your renters or homeowners policy. You should be aware that this coverage is usually limited and may not cover the cost of an expensive stone. Furthermore, such policies often only cover theft, not loss of the stone should it fall out of its setting. If you have a ring you feel should be covered more fully, ask your agent about a jewelry floater or the oddly named inland marine floater.

Cost And Acquisition.

The cost of wedding insurance starts at around $200 for $3000 worth of coverage. Naturally, each floater will add to the premium. Call around for insurance agents who offer wedding insurance, their numbers are growing. Fireman's Fund Insurance was the first to offer this type of insurance, and provide the most comprehensive policy. Their policy is offered through R.V. Nuccio & Associates Insurance Brokers Inc.

One Last Thing.

Wedding insurance does not cover you for change of heart. Sorry to say, if either the bride or groom decides not to go through with the wedding, the people footing the bill will be out of pocket.

A Few Couples Helped By Wedding Insurance The couple who found themselves in the emergency room when the groom came down with appendicitis. The bride who arrived to pick up her dress, only to find a barred bridal salon with Out Of Business plastered across the window. The couple whose garden wedding was called off when a September hurricane blew in. The couple whose caterer went to a tropical island with the deposit money and never returned. The couple whose new home was cleaned out by burglars while they honeymooned in Florida.
