Q. What's the best type of protection for sex?

A. If you choose to have sex, latex condoms give you good protection because they are barriers - something that keeps you away from your boyfriend's or girlfriend's sex fluids. Other birth control methods only protect you from unwanted pregnancy. Using a condom isn't 100% safe against pregancy or STDs--only abstinence is--but it offers the best protection from STDs and pretty good protection from pregnancy if you do have sex. The best protection is to use birth control pills or depo provera to prevent pregnancy AND latex condoms to protect against STDs.

Q. Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs): I'm not at risk, right?

A. Wrong. One out of every four teenagers will get an STD, even though lots of teenagers think they know how to protect themselves. There are other STDs out there besides HIV, and they are on the rise among teens. They include chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, herpes and human papillomavirus (HPV) which causes genital warts and abnormal Pap smears.

Q. What doesn't spread STDs? The real truth about tattoos and body piercing.

A. The risk of STDs from tattoos and body piercing should be low because of all of the recommendations for how the instruments used are supposed to be sterilized - or thrown away. If you have them done, be sure that you use an authorized professional. In general, tattoos and body piercing are a low risk for STDs - much lower than things like having unprotected sex.

Q. A bug's life: What bacteria, viruses and other critters can get passed around by having sex?

A. Different sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) have different characteristics, symptoms and ways of spreading. Also, different organisms cause different STDs.

Bacteria: A microscopic germ that can cause disease; it can be cured with antibiotics. Examples of STDs caused by bacteria are syphilis, gonorrhea and chlamydia.
Virus: A microscopic germ that can cause disease; it cannot be cured by antibiotics but can be treated. Examples of STDs caused by viruses are HIV, herpes, HPV and genital warts, and hepatitis B. Really Small Critters: Small insect or insect-like creatures. Some you can see, some are too small to be seen, but all are bigger than viruses or bacteria. These critters can be treated and cured. Examples include scabies and crabs.

Q. Will you pass the test?

A. How will they test you for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs)? For some STDs, all the doctor or nurse will need is for you to urinate (pee) into a cup. They can tell a lot by looking for certain organisms in your urine. Some STDs may be diagnosed by swabbing (taking a cotton swab or small wooden spatula) and taking a sample of vaginal secretions (fluid, cells) and looking at it under a microscope. Other STDs, like herpes are diagnosed by culturing (growing quickly) the fluid inside the little sores or blisters. Sometimes a blood sample will be taken for tests. Ask what kind of test you will have. Remember the doctors and nurses want to help you.

Q. Looks can be deceiving: What is the real story on symptoms and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs)?

A. Most people who have STDs have no symptoms. Someone you know could have gotten an STD, not realized it, and could be spreading it if he or she has unprotected sex. Sometimes the only way to know if you have been infected is to get a test. Some STDs may not yet be detected (seen) even when tested. Since there is probably no way to know for sure if your partner is infected, always use latex condoms or another barrier if you choose to have sex.

Q. What is puberty?

A. Puberty is the bridge between being a kid and becoming an adult. Usually between the ages of 9 and 16 years old, your body starts growing and changing. These changes occur from head to toe, and they are completely natural as your body responds to increased hormones.

As you cross this bridge, your body and your feelings change a lot. You also may feel differently about your family, friends and classmates--and may view the things that they do in a whole new way. You may feel like changing what you do with them, the way you dress and the things you talk about. These differences are called "social" and "behavioral" changes.

Q. Why do some teens have sex?

A. Some teenagers have sex because...
They want to feel accepted.
It feels good.
It's "cool" to have sex.
It's easier to have sex than to talk about it or say no.
They want to feel close to someone.
They feel peer pressure.
They're in love.
They want to experiment.
They have raging hormones.

Q. What is the difference between love and sex? A quick summary.

A.Love
Love is a feeling (an emotion).
There is no exact "right" definition of love for everybody.
Love involves feelings of romance, attraction.
Sex
Sex is an event or act (physical).
There are different kinds of sex, but all kinds of sex have some things in common.
Sex may or may not involve penetration.
Sex can happen between a male and a female, between two females, between two males, between more than two people, or by one's self (masturbation).

Q. How do I deal with peer pressure?

A. First off, remember that almost everyone has to figure out how to deal with peer pressure. It doesn't happen by magic, but here are some tips for keeping the pressure off:
Date several people and hang out with different groups of people.
Go out with a group of friends rather than only your date. Think of what you would say in advance in case someone tries to pressure you.
Be ready to call your mom, dad or a friend to pick you up if you need to leave a date.
Never feel obligated to "pay someone back" with sex in return for an expensive date or gift.
Say "no" and mean "no" if that's how you feel.

Q. What is date or acquaintance rape?

A. It's when someone that you know or you've gone out with hurts you sexually. REMEMBER: If you have been sexually hurt, it is NOT your fault. You should NOT feel guilty or ashamed. If you have been hurt, contact your local Rape Crisis Center or someone you trust like a friend or parent.

Q. Why don't teenagers protect themselves if they are having sex?

A. It's not always because people don't know. Sometimes they. . .
are embarrassed about buying or getting condoms feel peer/date pressure
use alcohol and drugs
have a lack of knowledge
believe using birth control pills is enough protection
are embarrassed about asking questions
don't think ahead of time
