Birth Control - Pill

Deciding on a Method of Contraception

Effectiveness is one of the things to consider when choosing a birth control method. It is important to keep in mind that the "best" method for an individual and her or his partner depends on which method the couple will use consistently and properly.

All effectiveness rates are based on the first year a couple uses a contraceptive method. Highest expected rates are the effectiveness found for uses of the method if used consistently and correctly. Typical used effectiveness rates are based on studies of average couples and take into account how well they use a method and how motivated they are to avoid pregnancy.

Choosing a method for contraception and/or STD prevention at this time does not mean it becomes a permanent method for the duration of your sexual life. The method that is right for a person at a given point in her or his life may evolve along with a changing body, personal preferences, needs, relationships and reproductive technology.

Oral Contraceptives

"The Pill" is a tablet, taken daily which contains synthetic hormones which, when absorbed into a woman's bloodstream, work to prevent the release of the egg from the ovary. For oral contraceptives to be effective, a woman must take a pill each day at approximately the same time.

Oral contraceptives are not for everyone, and a thorough medical exam is required before a physician will prescribe the Pill. This form of contraception is not recommended for women who have a history of high blood pressure or heart disease, blood clots in the legs or lungs, angina pectoris, tumors in the breast or sex organs, or unusual, undiagnosed vaginal bleeding.

In Case of Contraceptive Failure: The Morning After Pill

Up to 72 hours following unprotected intercourse, and preferably less than 24, you may choose to take the Morning After Pill. The Morning After Pill treatment actually consists of four pills, two taken initially and two more taken twelve hours after the initial dosage. This is not a form of contraception. Each of the pills contains a high dosage of the synthetic hormones estrogen and/or progesterone. The pills prevent implantation of a fertilized egg in the uterus. Some women may experience side effects including headache, nausea and vomiting. More serious side effects may occur, and those women who are advised against using birth control pills are advised not to use the morning after pill.

The morning after pill has been proved highly effective if used within the recommended time period. However, if pregnancy does occur despite the use of the pills, the hormones may adversely affect the fetus. If a woman is already pregnant when she takes the pills, the morning after pill will not induce an abortion and will endanger the health of the fetus. Prior to the administration of the morning after pill, a woman should be given a pregnancy test, which will detect a pregnancy if conception occurred more than ten days prior to the test. The morning after pill is not a form of contraception. Also, it will not prevent

pregnancy if you have unprotected intercourse again after taking the pills.
