Caters for Wedding - Questions to ask your Caterer

Food plays an important role in the wedding festivities. Don't forget to ask your caterer these critical questions.

1. Find out what is your caterer's speciality. There is so much variety and choice when it comes to menu selection these days. It's no longer "chicken" or "dal". You can have a traditional sit down dinner, buffet, food stations or snacks. It all depends on your personal preference and budget.

2. How many dishes does he offer as a spread?

3. What does he charge per plate? Don't assume that a buffet or food stations is less expensive that a sit down dinner. Remember, it depends more on what type of food you serve that determines the price. Does he charge separately for the sweet dish/icecream and cold drinks?

4. Ask if your caterer will do a "tasting" (sampling and tasting the proposed menu). Most caterers allow that but you have to ask for it.

5. Ask what is done with the leftover food. Particularly, if you are having a buffet or food stations there can be food leftover. You can choose to have the leftover food given to a homeless shelter or similar charity organization. You can ask your caterer to pack the leftover food for the bride or groom's parents. It's a big help if they are entertaining any out-of-town relatives.

6. Many caterers will quote prices based upon a certain number or minimum number of guests. For instance, many caterers base their figures on a minimum of 200 guests. If you're final guest count is for only 180 guests, you still have to pay for 200 people. If you overshoot, they should simply charge you on per plate basis.

7. What is the Ratio of Servers to Guests? One good rule of thumb is to have one server for every 20-25 guests. 8. Dress code of servers and waiters should be discussed. You wouldn't want them to stick out like sore thumb on the wedding day.

9. Check pictures of their table displays. Some caterers that do buffets or food stations will include floral arrangements and other decorations.

10. Check the table linens, napkins, dishes, and glassware. Ensure that they go with the overall décor of the venue.

11. How much space does he need for the cooking?

12. Find out if he would serve beverages and snacks in the night if the ceremonies go on till late.
