Bridal Shopping - Best Man's Speech Guidelines

Deciding whether to crack everyone up or keep it safe and serious is one of the dilemmas many Best Men face when it comes to the "Best Man's Speech". Since developing a speech can be a challenging responsibility, we took the liberty of giving you some examples of speeches that are sure to make the moment memorable and even touching. Here are some basic tips to keep in mind:

Identify yourself and your relationship with the bride and groom (not everyone will know who you are).

Speak slowly, clearly and loud enough for everyone to hear.

Thank the parents of the bride and groom if they paid for the event. If the bride and groom are footing the bill themselves, thank them for inviting everyone to share the big day.

Tell a story or use an inspirational quote.

Finally, end with a message of hope and congratulate the blushing bride and proud groom.

If the Best Man is a Friend:

Example 1: I would like to thank all of you for coming tonight and sharing this special occasion with Sue and Bob. I've know Bob for several years and am very happy to see my good friend get married to such a great girl. Ever since Bob and Sue met, they have been inseparable. I have seen their love for each other grow stronger and stronger through some tough times. Tonight, I would like to offer Sue and Bob and old Irish Blessing.

Sue and Bob may the road rise to meet you may the sun shine warm upon your face, the rain fall soft upon your fields, and until we meet again may god hold you in the hollow of his hand.

Thank you Bob for being such a good friend over the years. I wish you and Sue the best of luck in the future.

And finally, In closing, To Sue and Bob: May all your Ins and Outs, & Ups and Downs, be between the sheets...Cheers!!

Example 2: Tonight, it is my great honor and privilege to make the first toast to Bob and Sue as husband and wife. While some people know that Bob and I went to both high school and college together, it is a little known fact that our first meeting occurred while playing CYO soccer in grade school. Bob played for St, Joe's & John's, I played for their arch rival, Incarnate Word Academy. During the course of one of our games in the eighth grade, Bob took a free kick just outside our goal. I was one of the defenders that stood in the wall. Rather than opting to put the ball on goal, Bob launched a blistering shot into my thigh. As a result, I had the impression of a soccer ball tattooed on my leg for about a week. While that impression was only temporary, the impression that Bob has made on me as a classmate, teammate, roommate, and friend will last forever. Bob has always been there when I needed him. He is honest and trustworthy.

In short, Bob is a great guy and he has found a great girl in Sue. Alas, let us toast Sue and Bob. May they live a long life together filled with love and laughter. May their joys be many and their troubles few. Congratulations!

Example 3: Sue & Bob, I love you both so much! You two have been dear friends to me longer than you've been dating -- which is a very, very, VERY, long time! I have seen you both grow as individuals and flourish as a couple. Separately, you two are special, remarkable people -- but together you are complete. Today, we celebrate everything you have found in each other -- a best friend, a lover, a teacher, a playmate, a true partner -- for life. As you sit side by side through this roller coaster of life, remember to: scream from the peaks, hold hands through the dips, laugh through the loop-the-loops, and enjoy every twist and turn --for the ride is better because you share it together.

Please join me in a toast: To love, laughter and happily ever after! To Sue & Bob... Finally!!!

If the Best Man is Family:

Example 1: I would like to propose a toast to the bride and groom. However I would like to take a few minutes to start Sue and Bob on the path to a happy successful union, with just a few suggestions. Always love each other. Always respect each other and always be there for each other. May the best day of the past be the worst day of your future…. And a bride and groom are indeed best friends. For good friends, come not with time, but with trust. Our love to the both of you…Cheers!!!

Example 2: A toast from the father of the groom - When you have a young son you hope when he grows up to marry a girl who is beautiful. Then later on, you think maybe he will marry a girl with a good personality. Then, you hope maybe he will marry a girl who is smart. But it turns out, he is smarter than you think because he marries a girl who has all those characteristics. We are very happy for them.

Example 3: A toast from a brother -
It took my bother 19 years of beatings, of arguments and threats for him to figure out who the best man really is…(pause for laughter). I wish Sue and Bob nothing but the best. I hope you two have nothing but good times ahead. Always love each other, always respect each other and always be there for each other.

How About Quick and Simple:

May your refrigerator always be filled with Budweiser, and May all of your ups and down's be under the covers.

May you grow old together on one pillow.

May you be friends to each other as only lovers can; and may you love each other as only best friends can.

May you live each day like your last, and live each night like your first.

As you slide down the banister of life, may all the splinters be in your direction!!!

May your love be modern enough to survive the times and old-fashioned enough to last forever!

May you have love, health & wealth; but most importantly, may you have the time to enjoy them all.

Let your love endure beyond the last sunset.

(Great for math teachers) May your love be added, may it never be subtracted, may your household multiply, and may your hearts never be divided!!

"Here's to the prettiest, here's to the wittiest, here's to the truest of all who are true, here's to the neatest one, here's to the sweetest one, here's to them in one - here's to you!!!" (Groucho Marks).

A Little Humor and a Poem:

Example 1: Congratulations on the termination of your isolation, and may I express my appreciation of your determination to end the desperation and frustration that has caused you so much consternation in giving you the inspiration to make this unification and bring an accumulation to the population. So as I end my toast to this occasion, and wrap up my salutation, I raise my glass to this combination, and bid good luck to the consummation! So cheers, and on with the celebration!
Example 2: Well I took Bob to the drugstore today before the ceremony and as we walked past the condom section he had a few questions. "What are all these condoms for," Bob asked. "Well you see that 3 pack there, that's for when you're in High School. One for Friday night and two for Saturday night." I respond. "Oh I see," Bob says, " and what is the 6 pack for?" "Well Bob that's for when you're in college. 2 for Friday night, 3 for Saturday night and one for Sunday morning," I say. "Ok, but then what the heck is the 12 pack for" Bob asks with a confused look on his face. "Oh that's for when you get married. One for January, One for February, One for March…" (laughter) May your married life be packed with pleasure…Congratulations!!!
